AWISS Objectives

AWISS has several short-term and long-term objectives, all with the aim to improve understanding of injuries in Wales, and use this enhanced knowledge to reduce injuries and the health, economic and social costs they place on the population of Wales.

SHORT TERM OBJECTIVES

  1. Measure the incidence of fatal and non-fatal injuries (by mechanism, type of injury, age, gender, Local Health Board, Local Authority, and deprivation)
  1. Measure the severity of injuries (by mechanism, type of injury, age, gender, Local Health Board, Local Authority, and deprivation)
  1. Measure the burden of injury on the Welsh population through the calculation of Disability Adjusted Life Years1 (DALYs) (by mechanism, type of injury, age, gender, Local Health Board, Local Authority, and deprivation)
  1. Monitor injury trends across time (by mechanism, type of injury, age, gender, Local Health Board, Local Authority, and deprivation)
  1. Undertake international comparative analyses (e.g. comparing injury rates in Wales to other countries across Europe and the World)
  1. Link and analyse data from multiple health, social and educational sources to:
  • improve understanding of the complex causal pathways and inter-relationships between injury related exposures, interventions and outcomes
  • identify risk factors for different types of injury
  • evaluate the effectiveness of injury prevention interventions
  1. Based on the findings of objectives 1-6, establish a list of key injury prevention priority areas
  1. Provide a timely and efficient data request service
  1. Communicate and disseminate AWISS findings to the public, injury prevention community and policy makers through several mediums, using clear and user-friendly language

LONG TERM OBJECTIVES

  1. Continuously strive to improve the quality and completeness of injury surveillance data
  1. Continuously strive to increase the quantity, breadth and depth of data available to AWISS
  1. Inform injury prevention policy and practice throughout Wales
  1. Reduce the incidence, impact and burden of injury in Wales

1 DALYs are the sum of the Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to premature mortality and the Years Lost due to Disability (YLD)
